From July 13 to 16, Videotron Business Solutions presented Startupfest, an event showcasing up-and-coming Quebec, Canadian and international start-ups.

30-second pitch

In partnership with MAtv, Videotron Business Solutions launched the 30-second Pitch contest. More than 100 start-ups came to presente their business idea. The winner was chosen by a jury composed of members from Videotron Business Solutions, Quebecor and MAtv. The winning start-up received a $30,000 prize in media visibility, which includes a mention in the Journal de Montréal (link in french only), a promotional campaign on MAtv and free access to workspace in Notman House for three months.

A start-up that cares about community innovation

Startupfest 2016’s winning pitch was presented by Key2Access, which was created by Sophie and Sarah Aladas. The two sisters wanted to improve mobility for downtown pedestrians using, among others, their app, which communicates with municipal technological installations. Their solution helps, for example, visually impaired people cross the street, or people with reduced mobility, parents with strollers and those with an active lifestyle. ‘‘Current infrastructures were built for the average person, not built for the individual,’’ said Sophie Aladas. The mobile app allows you to activate the pedestrian call button on traffic lights from a distance, and then sends a vibration signal to the user once it’s time to cross.

The Key2Access solution, which is currently being subjected to a trial run on two of the main arteries in Montreal, has big potential for development. In the long term, the two creators hope to make all municipal technological services accessible on their universal platform. By integrating receptors across the whole city, Key2Access hopes to contribute to the development of smart cities.

Once again, well done to Key2Access for standing out from the crowd with an innovative technological solution that serves the community.
